AGRICULTURE OF TUNISIA (APIA Agence de Promotion des Investissements Agricoles 2010)
The agricultural sector occupies an important place in the Tunisian economy, insofar as it ensures food security of the country, based mainly on domestic production and is the main activity in several regions.
Land resources:
* The area of agricultural land is estimated at 10 million hectares, divided between:
- Arable land: 5,000,000 ha;
- Rangeland: 4,000,000 ha;
- Forests and scrublands: 1,000,000 Ha.
* The 5 million ha of arable land are divided into uses as follows:
- Arboriculture: 2,000,000 ha (of which 1,600,000 ha of olive trees);
- Crops: 2,000,000 ha (including 1.6 million ha of grain);
- Fallows: 0.7 million ha;
- various crops: 0.3 million ha.
* The average farm size is 10 hectares (75% of farms are smaller than 10 Ha):
- 471,000 farms in 1995 (11 ha on average per farm).
- 516,000 farmers in 2005 (10.2 ha on average per farm).
* The area equipped for irrigation: 420 000 ha, of which 75% of facilities with water conservation.
Water resources:
* Resources available: 4.8 billion m3 divided between:
- Surface water: 2.7 billion m3;
